After moving away from his family and community to attend college, Carlos began to slip into depression and was unable to get the help he needed, prompting him to return home. He was able to resume school locally but even with his support system around, he started experiencing psychotic and manic episodes. Once he decided to speak to his mom and thesis advisor about what was happening in his life, he could speak more honestly about his mental health and start his recovery. Carlos consulted a handful of mental health professionals and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Since taking the reins on his recovery, he is now studying to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
