James’ Story: Navigating Recovery from Psychosis

James shares his experience of hearing voices and rediscovering himself.

Transcript:

JAMES: I was struggling with my mental health, seeing things, hearing things, just deteriorating. The voices I was hearing, they were very, very mean, very, very nasty. So I was putting a lot of blame on myself. One day, I just got into a stare in the mirror, and I didn’t see myself, really. I was just like, I’m tired of it, I’m gonna end it. And for some reason, instead of acting on what the voices were telling me, I just went out and told my aunt, I need help. And that was the best decision I’ve ever made. As soon as I got put in Navigate and I was going to the meetings and talking to people, it gave me something to look forward to every day. I worked primarily with Patrick and Jessica. We discussed plans for me, and they believed in me. And that gave me faith to believe in myself. I used to believe I was alone. I really felt like I had nothing to lose. And then me now, I have everything to lose, I love life. If you’re thinking about ending it all, never keep it to yourself. Because there are people that do care, you’re not alone. And if you need an example, I am the example that it does get better.
