Michigan Minds

Kyles Story: Working with an Individual Resiliency Training Therapist (IRT)

Michigan Minds is a resource hub for teens and young adults experiencing changes in thinking, emotions, and sensory perceptions such as hearing or seeing things that others don’t (also known as psychosis). Although these experiences can feel unusual, they’re not uncommon. And with the right kind of support, it gets better.

Michigan’s specialty care teams, called NAVIGATE and ACT Early, are available to support Michiganders ages 15-30, regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

We believe that every person facing a mental health challenge can access inner strength and wellbeing, so we created Michigan Minds to offer space where we could do just that – connect, learn and draw inspiration from one another.

Visit michiganminds.org to learn more about mental health, take a self-check questionnaire, and get connected to a team near you.

Transcript:

KYLE: I had to discipline myself, hitting the gym and running helping out my community, and day after day of doing that. I was happy. I was promised to get back to my old self and actually got way better. Navigate, without them I don’t think Id be here. They’ve showed me that somebody
actually cares about me and it it saved my life.

KYLE: I had no idea what psychosis was. I just automatically assumed I was crazy. Punch holes in the walls and threatening people, just thinking that everybody was out to get me, and I eventually met somebody from navigate. She promised me that she had helped me and I didn’t have any hope so I put all my trust in her. I had started a program and my therapist counselor they knew what they were talking about and they always give me feedback.

TRICIA: IRT stands for individual resiliency training. When you come in I want to know about you I want to know about your life your hobbies, what music you listen to, what’s meaningful to you.

KYLE: At that point, I wasn’t really talking to anybody outside of navigate, and talking to Trisha I found a sister her. She made me comfortable you know I trusted her.

TRICIA: I will never force you to talk about anything you don’t want to and I’m never here to judge. Whatever you want to work on, whether it be depression, anxiety, paranoia or suspicious thoughts.

KYLE: I’d be thinking flies are watching me. I thought everybody was still have to get me and having somebody listen to me was actually very confident.

TRICIA: IRT we take a step back and check what are the facts in the situation, and what might be a result of my like stress? Because stress is a big contributor towards psychosis.

KYLE: She gave me these skills that I could do, breathing techniques, setting myself in nature.

TRICIA: We’re here to support you and build up your strengths. we’ll work with you to figure out your goals, making a Wellness Plan.
